Fak’ugesi African Digital Arts Festival

Animating the streets of Braam in Johannesburg, using site-specific video projections.

‘When I signed up for an SDNA workshop in Johannesburg, I was very nervous and didn’t know what to expect. Ben and Valentina held my hand through the first steps and then allowed me and the other guys to go wild with creativity. I learnt by doing! SDNA broke the mental ceiling I had, in what can be achieved with cameras, dancers and projectors. Our exhibition from the workshop was see by thousands of people and my heart melted to see things we had made being projected on CBD skyscrapers! I have no more words to describe how hands-on and amazing the SDNA workshop was for me.’  Tafadzwa Tarumbwa – digital artist, Zimbabwe

Following a British Council/Connect ZA invitation to participate at the inaugural Alight and Fak’ugesi African Digital Arts festivals, we collaborated with a group of emerging international digital artists, and created three audio-visual interventions featuring talented young dancers from the Moving into Dance company. Works explored division, reconciliation and identity, and included high impact projections onto an adjacent tower block, the entrance of the Tshimologong Innovation Precinct (where the festivals were held), and within the festival itself.
